Argay Notes - May 19, 2009

Portland Parks & Recreation will again conduct a Mobile Summer Playground Program in Argay Park this summer from June 22 thru August 13 – two days a week:

Monday:  11 a.m. – 2 p.m. ; Wednesday:  10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

A PP&R vehicle with two young people come to the Park with various toys, games, art supplies, etc., to occupy neighborhood youngsters, giving them an opportunity for some time outdoors in the Park.

We received a request from Portland Parks asking for donations of our discards (see below) for use in these programs.

FROM PORTLAND PARKS & RECREATION

Did you know that there could be valuable art supplies in your recycling bin? We are a group of Community Development majors in Portland State University's School of Urban Studies and Planning, and this spring, we're helping PP&R jump-start the Summer Playground Program by requesting the generous support of our communities. Almost everyone has usable materials around their homes, and the Summer Playground Program is always looking for donated supplies. We would love to help you get rid of your usable recycling! We're looking for:

Toilet paper rolls  Paper towel rolls   Wrapping paper or empty rolls   Baby food jars  Yogurt containers  Egg cartons  Pie tins Paper plates  Jars  Straws  Plain white new clothing for tie-dye  Button machine   Label maker   Clean meat trays  Yarn Embroidery floss   Bead supplies   Anything else you think might be useful!

If you have some of these items that you'd like to donate, you can coordinate a pickup by emailing portlandparksprogram@gmail.com. Please pass this message on to anyone you think might be interested in supporting the Summer Playground Program!

Argay Notes – March 17, 2009

 Parkrose Farmers Market
…opens May 2.  Hooray!  Debit cards and Oregon Trail Cards accepted this year. OPENING DAY IS A BIG HOO-HAW: live music--four bands--plus Rose City Roller Derby Girls to meet and greet. New produce vendors and new crafters join the originals. Live music every week.

 Argay Park – Reporting Website
The City is experimenting with a website that lets residents notify them of needed maintenance and other information.  www.parkscanpdx.org

 Hazardous Waste Disposal (free)
To add to your calendar:
Fire Station 2, 4800 NE 122nd
Friday & Saturday, May 15-16
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This is for materials that we generally can’t accept at our May 30 Argay Neighborhood Clean-up, including:

Batteries, small compact (curly) fluorescent light bulbs (not the long fluorescents); car fluids (radiator fluid, motor oil), old medications excluding narcotics and red bio-hazardous containers for diabetics -- (empty all medications into a plastic sack so that personal information on pill bottles isn't disseminated); household cleaners and solvents; paints and paint thinners, aerosol paint; fertilizers and pesticides.

Residential only, not for businesses.

 Speeding Karma
Neighbors reported a crash between two speeding vehicles on Shaver in which a parked vehicle was also damaged.  For the speeders:  Hello, high-risk insurance premium?

Budget Cuts May Hurt Neighborhood Livability
--Abandoned Auto Program.
City plans to eliminate the Abandoned Auto program in July 2009. We’re asking residents to contact City Council to (courteously and briefly) request that that program not be dropped.

--Argay Removed from East Precinct?
Proposal #10 of Portland Police Bureau’s Proposed Three-Precinct Configuration envisions putting half of Wilkes and all of Argay and Parkrose under Northeast Precinct’s purview.  Northeast Precinct is located roughly at Killingsworth & MLK Blvd, about 8 miles from us (a 20- 25-minute drive) while East Precinct is located at 737 SE 106th, about 3 miles and a 7-minute drive away.  Proposal #10 would extend Northeast Precinct’s patrol area considerably. We would be effectively isolated from access to our precinct, as well as isolated from other East Portland neighborhoods in the EPNO coalition. To voice your (courteous but brief) objections, contact the previously listed City Council members plus Chief Rosanne Sizer at rsizer@portlandpolice.org or via her assistant Linda Metzger at 823-0008

Argay Neighborhood Spring Clean-up
You can start planning ahead for your annual yard and house beautification.  Get rid of your yard debris and unwanted household effects. Saturday, May 30, is the date. Questions? Contact Events Planner Brent Jacobs 971-340-9127.  Argay residents only, and no contractors.

 Police Stories

--Marijuana Grow Houses
Here’s a bit of good news in an otherwise gloomy real estate market: it’s harder for the criminals to buy marijuana grow houses in our neighborhoods, now that “no down payment” loans are no longer available.

--Cop Chase Story
ANA was asked by neighbors to find out what all the police activity was February 12 & 13.  Lt. Tom McGranahan of East Precinct shared this information with us:

On February 12, two East Precinct officers working the Gang Detail had cause to pat down two suspected gangsters found behind one of Argay’s apartment complexes.  During the pat-down of the first suspect, a gun was discovered, at which time the second suspect took off running.

Numerous officers were dispatched to help set up a perimeter and search for the second suspect.  Argay residents witnessed a large police presence in the area for about an hour (which held up traffic for some Argay residents trying to get onto Sandy Blvd.

The second suspect got away that afternoon, possibly with the help of family or friends.  However, the officers were able to identify him and located him the following day, Friday the 13th, at another complex. That brought another big presence of officers doing their jobs.  Bad day for the bad guy, good day for the cops and Argay residents.  Congrats to our officers.
